This wing was made with a more delicate technique developed for that question. A second wing, made without the refinement, served as the control.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhen firing began, this wing held blue and the control did not. No blue pigment was added: it was the Morpho's own structural blue, held in silver. As firing continued, the silver sintered and contracted and the blue disappeared, most likely because the contraction shifted the spacing in the fossilized texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTo bring the colour back without hand-polishing away the detail, the wing was chemically brightened in a professional facility. This removes an even layer of surface metal without sanding or buffing, so the fine texture of the wing is kept. It was then finished in Haft's rainbow patina.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThe result\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eA lustrous blue that shifts with the viewing angle, mostly a minty, icy blue.
